Review: 2007 Cameron Hughes Cabernet Chalk Hill Lot 140

Zero Coupon Bond

Rating: Elegant and high class.  Collectible capable of improving with extended aging.  Very, very young. Great investment for drinking down the road.  Unbelievable at $16.

The Rest of The Story:  (Full disclosure: This wine was received as a press sample from the winery.) Cameron Hughes' brilliant business model was the subject of a recent article and this wine is a terrific example of how that model benefits consumers...

From the venerable Chalk Hill AVA and the noteworthy 2007 vintage, everything about this Cab says expensive.  No surprise - you could pay $65 for a Cabernet from Chalk Hill.  But $16?  It practically falls into the too-good-to-be-true category.  Thankfully, it's not.  It's a freaking steal.

Though it's almost unfair to judge this wine so clearly in its infancy, it sure is fun to try.  The elegant color and movement in the glass tempts you into giving it a hasty gulp.  But patience pays off with.  It's one of those wines you can drink through your nose and distill its quality before even giving into that temptation.

Tasting it on opening it's intense and mouth-puckering with a silky smooth texture.  And definitely bold.  But after four hours decanted the tartness smoothing out - a different animal altogether.  Round, dark, with a medium finish, it's hard not to fantasize about what this wine will be like in 10 years.

We'd click our heels and wait in line to buy this wine for $25 or morethe value is that extraordinary.

A few days after this tasting, the bottle made its way to the recycling bin. On the label a hastily scrawled note indicated when to start drinking this one: "2015----->".  Like a zero coupon bond, this one's a wise investment for future drinking.
