Review: 2005 Tenuta di Salviano Turlo Lago di Corbara

Italian Love

Philip Hamilton at Spagio Cellars gives great recommendations.  So far the guy hasn't disappointed with any of his picks - and he manages to unearth some wines that otherwise never would've crossed our radar.  This latest gem is no exception; a big, balanced, and giving Supertuscan for $20.

Okay, so maybe it's not exactly a supertuscan since it's really from the shores of Lake Corbara in the DOC of Orvieto in Umbria, but it's definitely got the Supertuscan blending and character right.

Philip recommended this for its potential for longevity, we like it for its right-now appeal.  Lovely, silky, incredible personality.  It's dark in the glass, not quite brooding, but shimmery and dense.  Absolutely needs to be decanted - not that there's any sludge in it, but this is a wine that was built to last.  Still, it's incredibly accessible right now.  Big, comforting fruit delivered in a velvety Italo-international style.  A blend of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Cab, and 20% Merlot - and it tastes exactly like those proportions with the Cabernet not quite talking over the Sangiovese, but harmonizing with it.

Considering what most drinkable Supertuscans fetch at retail these days, this is a relative bargain.  Imported by Kobrand Corp.
